Developing Respite Services
Written by Jennifer Roe

Respite survey What does Respite Mean to You...?
What does Choice mean...?
What should good Respite achieve...?

These were some of the questions considered recently at an even to start the development of a local Respite Strategy.

Do you have an opinion about Respite?  Why not join in the debate on our Blether pages or tell us what you think in our short survey on the Your Voice webpage.

"In addition to the daily help, I was given a one-week break every three months but found by the end of the first week I was just starting to unwind - a second one would have been beneficial.  That being said, it changed my life and I feel we ought to be raising public awareness as to what's available because no one should have to carry the full load of caring by themselves."

“I have always been troubled...by the notion of respite which implies a cared-for person is a problem or burden and that Carers need to have the burden removed for a short period of time to gather strength, in order to return to ‘grim reality’……… (also) for people to get to breaking point, then have a short period of absence from their role in order to start over again is not very positive.”

New Joint Community Care Plan

Over the last year, East Dunbartonshire Council has been consulting Carers and users of services on how they would like local services developed over the next 3 years.  Carers Link has been actively involved in ensuring that the views of Carers have been included in the new Joint Community Care Plan and welcomes the prominence that Carers’ issues were given during this process.  You can now read both the new Joint Community Care Plan which was launched on 25th June and the summary of the comments made during the consultation.

The Joint Community Care Plan is the core community care planning document for East Dunbartonshire Council and East Dunbartonshire Community Health Partnership and was prepared in consultation with Carers Link East Dunbartonshire. The Plan makes clear statements about the commitments to improve services for people who have community care needs and their families, and identifies what the priorities are. There is an action plan for how priorities will be delivered, as well as a statement on how progress will be monitored and reported.

Group Input

After almost 4 years in operation and having run various different groups for Carers during that time, we would be very interested to hear your thoughts about what kind of group support, if any, you would like.  You may or may not have been to one of our groups in the past, and you may have very definite ideas as to whether you found it met your needs if you did attend.

We have some ideas as to how our groups could develop in the future - Tell us what you think in this short survey!
