Looking after a Child with Additional Needs

Most parents don't think of themselves as a 'Carer', however whilst all parents have a supportive and caring role, being a parent does not convey the added responsibilities, pressures or worries that may be felt when your child has additional or complex needs. These needs may be caused by a wide range of reasons such as a physical disability, a medical condition, a learning difficulty or disability, by Autism, Aspergers or a combination of needs.

Of course it is not just the parents that may be involved in the support and care of a child with additional needs - grandparents, siblings and other extended family may all be involved in providing care. Indeed, grandparents may also be the sole carers with parental responsibility transferred to them for either a short time or permanently through court arrangements.

Carers Link works with Parent and Grandparent Carers in East Dunbartonshire to provide them with the information, emotional support and advocacy they may need to assist them with the added concerns of looking after a child with additional or complex needs.

This section of our web site will cover what Carers of children with additional needs have reported as being the main areas of interest to them and we have included links to other local and national bodies on more specific, specialist and wider issues than we can cover in detail here.
